Early Life and Education

Devin Nunes was born on October 1, 1973 in Tulare, California as the older of two sons of Toni and Anthony. Along with his brother Anthony III, he is of three-quarters Azorean Portuguese descent. After earning his Associate of Arts degree from the College of the Sequoias in 1993, Nunes attended Cal Poly, from which he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in agriculture.

Career Beginnings

Following his graduation from Cal Poly in 1996, Nunes was elected to the board of his other alma mater, the College of the Sequoias. He remained on the board for many years. In 2001, Nunes was appointed by George W. Bush as California State Director for the US Department of Agriculture's Rural Development division.

Congressional Career

Nunes first ran for US Congress in 1998, when he finished in third place for California's 20th congressional district. He ran again in 2002 for the 21st congressional district, which had recently been created by reapportionment. Nunes ended up winning by four points over his closest competitor, former Fresno mayor Jim Patterson. He went on to win reelection in 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2010. Following the 2010 census, Nunes's district was renumbered as the 22nd, and he continued winning reelections through 2020. Meanwhile, in 2015, he became the chair of the House Intelligence Committee. First Trump Impeachment

Nunes was a key player in the first impeachment of Trump in 2019. He delivered the opening statement for the GOP minority during the public hearings, and perpetuated the conspiracy theory that it was Ukraine that had tried to influence the 2016 presidential election instead of Russia. Later, Nunes worked with Rudy Giuliani's associate Lev Parnas to dig up dirt on Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, which was exactly what Trump was currently facing impeachment for doing.

Defamation Lawsuits Against Others

Nunes has been notorious for filing multiple "SLAPP" defamation lawsuits that experts have described as "virtually free of merit." He filed at least 11 of these between 2019 and 2023, including ones against Twitter, Elizabeth Mair, and the Twitter accounts @DevinNunesMom and @DevinCow. In that case, Nunes ended up drawing more attention to the accounts of the defendants, causing their followers to skyrocket. Elsewhere, he has filed defamation lawsuits against the McClatchy Company, Ryan Lizza and Hearst Magazines, the Campaign for Accountability, Fusion GPS, CNN, and the Guardian. Most of these lawsuits have been dismissed or withdrawn.

Personal Life

In 2003, Nunes married elementary school teacher Elizabeth Tamariz. They have three daughters together.
